Ernst and Bobbie are enjoying a well-deserved vacation when they discover that a beautiful nearby forest is about to be cut down. The villainous entrepreneur Wolter Onix wants to build an asphalt factory on the site to pave all of the Netherlands. But Ernst and Bobbie are determined to stop him so Onix challenges them to complete some tasks. If they succeed within three days, he promises not to build the factory. A curious Vixen Cub inquisitively chases a frog right into the lap of the surprised forester who forcibly takes the vixen home as a pet. Time passes and we see the Vixen, now grown up into a young adult tied up in the forester's yard with the conservative old dachshund. Fed up with life in confinement, the vixen chews through her rope and runs off to freedom.

American Bailey and her lover, Englishwoman Bobbie run a pub in a seaside town near Dublin, assisted by Bailey's brother David. Bobbie is diagnosed with breast cancer at the same time she learns that her estranged brother and his wife have died and their 10-year-old son, Alan, is orphaned into Bobbie's care. Bobbie and Alan are naturally struggling to cope with their situations while eccentrics Bailey and David try to provide encouragement.
